Post subject:  Steering Wheel Replacement Question

I need to replace the steering wheel on my 1993 190 Horizon and was wondering if there are any special requirements on the steering wheel I need to purchase? Also when removing my old wheel I noticed that there was a brass half circle peg that looked like it was the only thing that gripped the wheel to the spine. Is there anything I should be aware of when doing this swap? Thanks.

The shaft is tapered, with a keyway into which the metal part you describe fits. The hub of the wheel has a corresponding taper and keyway. The keyway is there to ensure the alignment is correct and stays correct as the nut is tightened/ the taper grips.

The taper is pretty standard ( some later FW boats had splines). Some wheels come with a built in hub, others have a seperate hub (but usually come with a new wheel) that is usually fitted to the wheel with 6 bolts, again a pretty standard bolt spacing for marine wheels ( there are some oddball ones out there though!)

Mine has the same tapered hub and the key. When reinstalling put some OMC triple guard grease on the hub and in the groove for the key, that will hold it in place when you reinstall the wheel.

You may need a gear puller to get it off.

With the tapered hub, its the clamping force that resulted from the nut pulling the wheel against the taper that makes it hard to remove. What you do is, remove the nut, then try to spray some PB Blaster in between the hub and the shaft if you can. Take the nut and screw it back on the shaft but not all the way. Then get a block of wood and a hammer. Hold the block of wood against the nut and just give it a rap with the hammer, you don't have to hit it hard. That shock will usually release the force holding the hub against the tapered shaft. That's how I did mine and when I removed it the wheel was on for over 20 years, and at least 10 years worth of salt air. I put a lot of OMC triple guard grease on the shaft if I ever haver to remove it again.

What he said. Mine came off with 2 taps. No puller needed.
