Faria replied to my query, it’s a 240-33 ohm sender. 240 is full. I went back to the boat and ohmed the sender again, got 111 this time. So I think the sender is ok. Maybe it was moisture last time that gave me the low reading. Anyway 111 corresponds to about 1/2 full which is what the gauge is reading. However, when I turn the key off the fuel gauge does not drop below 1/2 like the others so I don’t know if that’s a problem - have asked Faria.

Faria did say they could fix the gauge for $125 but like you said it’s the amount of time without the other 3 gauges on the multi-gauge and the hole in the dash. If it is the gauge, I might just get an aftermarket gas gauge and mount it under the dash until something else fails.

Hi, Funship 234, does anybody know the resistance of the fuel sender? My gas gauge isn’t working, stays at half tank. Pretty sure I have 12v to it and I measured the sender resistance at 123 ohms but would like to know the range so as to test the gauge with resistors. Also, mY be unrelated Tach is not working. The seems more mechanical as it jumps up or down when I tap it but it appears to be a sealed unit so I can’t go into it to see if something is rubbing the shaft/needle movement. Thanks for the help.

Wow, 63 views and no answer. Does anybody know of a mechanic or boat service place that might know? I sent a message to Four Winns but they are no help - no answer.

First what brand of gauges does your boat have...Faria? If so go into Faria’s website and do some reading, they will have some tech and troubleshooting info. For both the gas gauge and the tach make sure the terminals on the back side if the gauges are clean and tight. For the gas tank sender do the same. It will be under a circular cover in the deck or the whole tank hatch will have to come up.

Thanks Lou, yes they are Faria. I have taken out the suspect multi-gauge. If I short the terminal it goes to full so that tells me that the sender should go to zero at the top of its travel. The gauge does not go below 1/2 even when the sender is disconnected so there may be some gauge damage and it’s a sealed gauge. I haven’t been able to find a replacement but I will try the Faria site for more help. Maybe they will respond since Four Winns won’t. I did find the sender and checked resistance, it’s very low, less than 1 ohm but I keep the tank pretty full since the gauge is out. I think I can find a replacement sender but need to know the resistance range and depth of tank. I know I can measure the depth but don’t really want to pull the sender until I get a replacement due to fumes while it’s out.

Ok I think Faria has a repair service if you can wait for it, and I think Tempo makes those gas tank floats; you can look at their website and see if they have specs on the resistance values.

That's what I'd suggest...just get an inexpensive Teleflex fuel gauge and extend the original wiring out to the gauge, and rig something up to hold it so you can see it. Then get the OE one fixed in the off season. Another Faria guy clarified 33ohms is full which is where it went when I shorted the pink t9 ground. If I can’t get the multi-gauge to not stick, I’ll install a 2” gauge on a mount under the dash by the side where it won’t get in the way until something else fails and I decided to fix the multi. Thanks for the help.

btw, I'm sure someone has told you this before, but.... never trust a fuel gauge on a boat... ever! Learn your boat and how far you can go by always filling full to start each time. Most boats I've seen will overreport fuel levels until its too late. If mine even drifts off the F mark, I'm usually refilling for next trip.. lol

Thanks for the post and I appreciate your input but with a 70 gallon tank and an hour meter I can usually let it go down to 1/2 as long as the run hours agree.
