I have owned this 2002 214 Funship for the last 8 years. I have had an intermittent shutting down of the engine for about 6 years. The engine shuts down completely for no apparent reason and then will start up with no issue. Until the end of this year it really has not been a problem, because it didn't happen with any regularity. My mechanic has replaced the shift sensor which was not the problem years ago. Now it's a problem! When I take it out, it takes around 15 minutes for the issue to occur, and after that every 3 to 5 minutes for it to happen again. As I stated before, it will start up without issue each time after shutting down. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Any recommendations would be appreciated........

Thanks,
Dave

What engine/drive combination?
Fuel system/ignition system?

Hey Lou, it's a Chevy V8 305, 327 HP with a Mercruiser outdrive. Electronic ignition

Is it a carb engine TBI or EFI?
When it dies what else happens? You want to try to narrow it down to electrical or fuel. So when it dies do you lose your gauges too? That would suggest an ignition circuit fault. So for that there’s:
Battery cable & terminals
Cannon plug that connects engine harness to the instrument harness
Ignition circuit fuse
Ignition switch connections
Ignition coil and connections
Electronic ignition module

Fuel:
Fuel pump wiring and relay and oil pressure safety switch
Fuel pump itself
Anti siphon valve on tank outlet

Need to know what other symptoms you have when it dies.

Also I forgot to mention what about the safety lanyard & switch and the neutral safety switch in the remote control? If those were acting up you would still have gauges working. Are you using wing nuts to attach the cables to the battery? If so replace with self locking nuts. Cables original? What about the engine ground stud?

Thanks for all your recommendations, it is really helpful. I have some troubleshooting to do........
It is not a carborator, it is fuel injected. We have already replaced the neutral safety switch and that did not help. I have pulled the pin on the lanyard switch and reset that, and that seems to be working fine. Is there a way to check this switch other than real time. Or do you suggest I just replace it? I'm pretty sure all my gauges stop working when my issues happens. Whatever happens, its just so weird that just pull the throttle back to neutral and it always starts up without any problems.

If your gauges drop out at the same time it’s likely that you have a fault in the ignition circuit. See if you can get a hold of a wiring diagram to trace power & ground. The safety lanyard & neutral switch shouod not cause your gauges to drop out.
