we recently purchased a 2005 funship 264 with the 8.1 volvo penta dual prop drive. The boat only had 21 hrs on it when we bought it in March, now it has 35 or so on it. Sometimes when putting it in gear and giving it a little throttle there is a vibration or a shudder to the boat. It goes away if you give it more throttle...but its like there is a certain spot where the vibration occurs. There is no visible damage to the stainless props, and there is not a scratch anywhere on the skeg or drive unit. Any suggestions? |

There is only a few things it could be based on what you described. If it were mine even though you see nothing in the props I would have them sent to to a reputable prop guy...not just a welder. I do not know of a welding shop that can balance a prop. That is what prop shops do. It may look fine but that does not mean they are balanced. I have seen imbalances right from the factory. If its not that then it could be engine alignment, coupler issues or an engine imbalance...but my money is on the props. |

my boat shook you like an earthquake simulator at slow speeds. I got a new prop. Considering you have DP i'd just have them balanced, you can't get new ones for $100 shipped |

I will try and have them balanced. I did notice this last weekend that it only seems to do it when turning left or right. Once you hit a certain point in a turn at no-wake speed it seems to come on and go away once you turn back straight. Hope this fixes it. Will post result. |

When you say that you feel the vibs when you are at a certain point in the turn, that may suggest u-joints, but on a boat that new I think that would be unlikely, unless there was a water leak into the bellows and the joints were getting rusty and starting to wear. Also unlikely, but I think that unbalanced props would cause a vib all the time. I never had a DP so I don't know how sensitive they are to prop imbalances. |
