Ok so I boght a 1995 fourwinns 195 sundowner with a 4.3 vortex motor. The boat runs great except for the fact it won't go above 4000 rpms. 3/4 throttle to full throttle no difference. Tomorrow I'm going to slowly rev in in neutral to see if it goes above that but any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

By the way my name is Jeff and I'm from Georgetown Maine.

Welcome Jeff, check your linkages to carb. With engine OFF, check position of butterfly valve at 3/4 and full throttle, did the butterfly move? Also look at fuel systems, filters, strainers, lines, etc. Lots of rpm threads in the engines section too. One thing I've learned on this forum, is your problem is usually not unique, lotsa others have already lived and learned!

Rebuild carb. The kit is 16 bucks

Wouldn't waste your time rebuilding carb as it runs great already so can't be a carb issue check the adjustment on the throttle cable

because it's always the carb. Boats sit. Sitting = gas evaporates. That = varish/jelly build up = weird running issues. Every year you should rebuild it for optimal performance. Its the best $20 you'll ever spend. If only FI engines could be so easy.

Likely not the carb. Don't bother with that since it runs. Could be your prop not allowing full RPM. What prop do you have on it ?

I don't know what brand prop but I know its the right size. I'll be headed down there soon to check the other stuff. Question if the boAt is reaching 37 at 4000 rpms like stated on fourwinns site can I assume the boat isn't waterlogged. Reading some posts on here makes me scared I made a 5000.00 mistake

Ok so checked linkage appears to be opening all the way. Revved slowly in neutral and it does go above 4000. I noticed oil in the bilge checked the oil the level was fine. When I checked the power steering fluid it was low. I did notice that the two hoses on the valve covers where not hooked up. I tried finding where they went but had no luck. Any additional info will be greatly appreciated.

Those hoses are the crankcase vent hoses. They go near the flame arrestor and that lets the engine pull any crankcase vapor into the engine.

Would this make sense for why there was oil. Coul this also be the rpm problem? Would the person who sold it have benefitted by unhooking them. Or was it just a dumb mechanic.

My crankcase vent hose has a small metal bracket that hooks onto the flame arrestor hold down nut but that end of the hose is just open and doesn't really hook into any sort of a fitting. There could be a small amount of blow by oil that comes out but shouldn't be enough to be noticable unless the engine is really worn. Any leak of engine oil or power steering fluid will end up in the bilge, even from a sloppy oil filter change.

Like sd said, the vent hose isn't supposed to be hooked to anything, it allows unused vapor to be re-introduced to carb. You could check the inside of it to see if there is any oil residue, but it would have to be a very worn engine to be spitting oil out. I think your culprit is the power steering pump. Check all the connections there, or hook up the muffs and let her run while observing, usually the best way to look for leaks.

As far as your original prob with rpm's and mph, my 96' with the 5.0 (2bbl carb) tops out at 37mph with full tank O' gas and 3 people on board. Probably can coax it to 40 with less gas and just me onboard, but I'm happy cruising in the 30mph range, but thats how I roll

There are many things you can tinker with, like ric said, you can rebuild the carb, play with prop sizes/pitch...but in the end, it may just come down to the ole "it is what it is".....

Ok well it's all figured out. The oil leak was from the oil sending unit. It must have been over tightened at some point cause there was a small crack in the threads. Had to use a nipple with a 90 since the part store didn't have a 45 but oil leak is all set. The rpm problem was due to me being and idiot. My 3.0 mercruiser had the trim where you could set it and you could always get perfect trim. This boat I wasn't trimming it up enough. Once I figured it out I was able to get 4200 rpms at 41 mph. Mph was gps cluster only read 36-37. I'd like to thank you for the help and look forward to learning more from the site
