Nah, its says "Volvo" because Volvo wants your $$$. I think I used Penzoil gear oil last year too. Worked just fine.

As long as it's a fully synthetic GL5 rated 75w90 gear oil (ideally with the emulsifier additive/ marine), you'll be fine.
At a push, a mineral oil to the above specs will also work, but will shear faster.
