Basically, its like fixing up an old car, lots of wires to run down. Do you have the guages out of the dash, or are you trying to fix it with hands up under the dash? The best way is to take the guages out and hook them up direct to the individual sending units on the engine. That way you know for sure if its the guage or the wiring between the engine and dash. I'm sure others will chime in with (hopefully) more better ways....

FW used to have the wiring diagrams for the older boats on their website in the customer service section. One thing I can say is on my '88, the fuses are numbered and the wires in the harness corresponding to that circuit are also numbered too. That makes it a bit easier to track things down. The other thing you could do if you can't find a diagram, is look on an instrument manufacturers website and see if you can find a typical wiring diagram, that might help trace things. The gauges on my '88 were made by a company called Medallion Instruments. They are original and they all still work.

I found that in my 1989 the fuses were a little corroded from sitting. Take them out and clean up the contacts and things may start to work!

The owners manual (including wiring diagram) is still on the Four Winns website; click the "customer service" tab and the owners manual section is at the bottom right hand side of the page.

During the last 35 years of boating, I have had this experience:
Speedometers (pitot tube type):
... usually quit because the pitot tube (at transom) is clogged or damaged
... the speedometer gauge does not require any power/wiring except for the light
... the gauge function can be checked by blowing (by mouth pressure) into a tube connected to the input
... water in the pitot hose should not go all the way to the gauge. trapped air should go into the gauge
Fuel gages
... Check for good connections at the fuel tank and the gauge.
... I have had to replace several sending units (at the gas tank), but only replaced 1 fuel gauge
Oil pressure
... never had to replace
Voltage Gauge
... Never had to replace
Tachometers
... Fairly reliable. A problem is likely with the wiring at the engine end.
Tilt/Trim indicators
... The sending units are notoriously unreliable. Many threads on the forum about these.

I have a full set of new Faria Gauges for sale. If interested, PM me for details.
