Is it the same GM style pump as on the older models? Serp belt or regular? I know on the older style GM pump you can rent a tool for Autozone that makes removing the pulley from the old one and installing it on the new one very easy. My old '98 Jeep has a GM style pump and I used that tool when I replaced the pump back in September.
However, I would not be so fast to condemn the pump. Go in the back of the boat and look at the P/S actuator behind the engine. Look for leaks there and from the lines that lead from the pump to the actuator. I have not had to fix mine and the pump and the actuator are original 26 years old.
