Unfortunately, your mechanic is right on this one. The VDO clusters are notorious for bad/wrong/false/no readings. All has to do with a factory grounding issue, which can be found in several threads here. If I was you, I would buy an aftermarket tach, and put it on/near dashpad. They are simple to hook up, do not cost much, and are 1000% more reliable than the factory VDO cluster.

To replace the VDO with another VDO would be throwing money away. Of course you could always upgrade to a new Faria style panel. Several folks have done that here, it can be on the expensive side, and most guys end up making their own custom panel.

Check it's not slipped into the V6 cylinder setting; e.g. a tach set for a 6 cylinder engine showing 6400 (1400 above say 5000 rpm) would equate with 4800 rpm for a V8. I think I got that right !!

Yeah, this is pretty typical. I purchased my own gauges and fabricated my own cluster out of carbon fiber.

Ohh yeah, that has been known to happen. Setting for V6/V8 is on the back of the cluster I think, up under the dash. Or do you have to remove tach from cluster? can't remember.

Well, the prob is, they don't make a direct swap Faria cluster for our year FW's. Most guys here buy the individual gauges, cut a dash panel from wood, aluminum, or carbon fiber, then put it in the dash. And yes, if ya buy a tach, follow directions that come with it as far as which wires connect to what, then pick a spot you want to put it.
