My 225 sundowner runs at normal 150 temp , I hadn't been out for a few weeks and I think the thermostat stuck because the temp kept going up and up to the scary zone so I stopped and turned it off, waited a few and started again and then it dropped down to normal and stayed there for the duration of my 45 min. cruise. So not sure how easy it is to replace?

Can be done in 20-60 minutes depending on mechanical ability and availability of tools. Not sure what engine you have but, if you are a little gun shy you could probably go on YouTube and look up a video of someone changing a thermostat on the exact engine you have...maybe a 5.7?


And yes, it does sound like it needs to be replaced.

Easy as long as the bolts for the housing come out. The stat is held in by a rubber ring that you have to pry out.

It is also possible that you just had a plastic bag of similar get wrapped around your outdrive (blocking the intake). I've had it happen before, so the first thing I do with an abnormal temperature is to go in reverse momentarily to clear any possible obstruction.

Thanks guys I will look at it today and if I will be doing it or paying. This boat with the 5.8 ford in in is a sob to work on so I usually take it in , for example the starter cable was loose and the boat had problems starting, but to even get to it was impossible so I took it to local guy that took care of it.

What style seating do you have? If its the U shaped, its very easy to remove the center engine housing (doghouse), once that's out, you have the whole top half of the engine exposed. As far as removing the T-Stat, its very simple. 2 bolts, 4 hoses. Make sure you have some shop towels or a small bucket to catch the water, or be quick to point the hoses into the bilge when you remove them. Also, make sure you have a new T-Stat housing gasket, cause the old one is not gonna be re-usable. Don't buy an "Official Volvo Penta" gasket, just pick up 2 or 3 from any auto parts store, it will save you a lot of $$$$.

I say again tho, check your impeller too.
