My trim gauge has been busted for two years. I finally had some major work done to the out-drive giving my mechanic access to it. The sender was replaced -- but upon further review the problem has now been traced to the VDO cluster...if I replace the gauge I need to replace the whole cluster. My mechanic says:
1. This is a common problem with Four Winns.
2. Finding a VDO cluster will be next to impossible.
3. Even if you find one, there'll be no guarantee it works.

REALLY??????

He suggested adding my own gauge (probably 30 bucks) somewhere near the dash and running wires to the sender. But they won't be in the factory-built harness. So he thinks I'm better off just doing...nothing.

Is he right?

Thanks!

Mark

Yes, VDO gauge clusters from the mid 90's to the early 00's are known to be bad, mostly related to a ground issue within the cluster. There is a company that will fix the ground for you and there is another company that will send you a replacement cluster (better option). You can also go the "build yer own cluster" route, many here have done it. Try these threads:
