I recently bought a 2000 Sundowner V8 5,0 GL with an SX outdrive. Has a 15X17 Aluminum looking to put a stainless I saw the recomendation for a 3 blade is a 14.5X19 anyone have any recomendations or even going to a 4 blade just looking to cruise and go tubing and not caring about a huge top speed any help would be appreciated.

Welcome! Always glad to see another SD owner join up. Where do ya boat at? As to your prop question, I have the factory prop and do exactly what you say you want to do (cruise and pull a tube) with no problem. Oh, lets see some pics of your SD!

I have a 14.5" x 19" SST 3 blade prop (Michigan Wheel) pushing my 2000 Horizon 240 with 5.7L SX drive. I have found it to be a good all-around prop for cruising and pulling. So considering that my boat is larger than yours and the 14.5" dia does well, you can see that you don't need to be worried about the reduced diameter (compared to your 15" x 17").

Those that do a lot of pulling have been touting the benefits of a 4 blade or even 5 blade for better whole-shot, and to be able to stay on plane at a slightly lower speed.

I changed to a Mercury Vensura 4 blade. 14x19. Rips out of the hole and gets on plane with no effort. Perfect for a boat loaded with lots of passengers. The best part? It's also one of the best top speed props made. I cruise getting amazing fuel consumption and it raised my WOT from around 44 to 48. It's pretty much the best sterndrive prop money can buy for a boat under 24ft.

Thank you everyone for your response I believe with some research a 4 blade prop 14 3/8X18 would be the correct one ive looked at Apollo any other brands out there that are good and resonable I know with the hub kit its around 380.00 I also found a 14 3/4 X 17 3 blade would work well and give me more top end speed but i like the docking control better and better holeshot and planing for tubing with the 4 blade. Thank you again for all the info much appreciated

Bob

I guess i need to start a photo bucket page in order to post pics

I have been interested in a prop change and my 2002 SD 205 with a VP 5.0 SX as well. My engine is carberated and has a 220 HP. I has a 14.5 x 19 four blade on it now. I would like a little better hole shot and like the idea of getting on plane faster and at slower speeds. I have considered going to a SS prop in the same size. Would reducing the diameter to a 14 x 19 four blade make much of a difference? I am mostly cruising and pulling tubes. Do the Mercury props fit the VP SX stern drive?

Vensura 14x19 with medium PVS holes.

I just put a Quicksilver Diamond 4 14.5 x 18 on my 205 Sundowner. I would like to go SS one day but can't swing it right now. I was looking for a better hole shot and stability once on plane. I seem to have gotten that and my at WOT I am at 4800 rpm which is the upper range for my engine. I was able to get 42 mph and could use my trim some. This is an improvement from last season. We will see if I still like this later on once I have corrected my waterlogged sponson problem.
