Hoping someone can help me out with tips on removing the alternator. From what I've already read, there is a tensioner to release the serpentine belt so it can be slipped off the alternator, but I'm not sure EXACTLY which bolt or bolts this involves. It appears that the tensioner on my engine is top left, opposite side to the alternator, with bolts left and right that I can see. There looks to be what I would call an 'idler' pulley below and just left of the alternator. How is the tension actually released? Any one know?

Thanks (pics here if that helps http://tinyurl.com/oqtzdtm)

On my 2004 5.7 GXi-F the tensioner ( probably a standard GM part) had a square pole in it that a 1/2" ( maybeit was 3/8") square drive breaker bar could be inserted. Nothing to slacken off, the bar could just used to remove the serpentine belt tension. I can't see they would change it on later engines.

Thanks Graham R. - from what I've read, they did in fact make a change to the GXI-G tensioner, apparently the same as the 8.1L engines of that year, 2005. I think all I need to do is use a breaker bar and socket on the large hex-head on the tensioner pulley, but hoping someone can confirm :)

The tensioner has the three bolts holding a round canister that then has the pulley in front. You should be able to just use a socket and ratchet to rotate it to remove the belt.

Thanks Terry - loosened the hex bolt, it has a large plate/washer behind it, but the tensioner pulley did not move at all. If I re-tightened the bolt, I could not move the tensioner clockwise, and I was too scared to force it further clockwise to see if the was the direction of movement. Any other tips? (managed to remove the alternator by removing the two retaining bolts and moving it to the right and tilted it downward to slip the belt)

tks, Brian
