...and that diagram does show a "crank driven" raw water pump. So if that matches yours, your raw water pump would have still been pumping without the belt. That explains why you did not have an overheat. (although without the circulating pump working, you would have gotten an overheat eventually when hot spots in the engine begin to boil)

OK, understand that now, thanks :D Explains why the temp gauge didn't register a reading either as there was likely no water passing over it!
