5.8 cobra

tested motor out with a hose when buying it seemed to fire up and run good no issues or stalling

went to water test it, put drain plug in, lowered into water, fired up nice no problems there, within 15 min, bilge engine compartment half way filled up with water, tried to determine if pumps was workin had them on, began to take alot of water in in the cab carpet soaked and about 4 inches ( pic included ) , belts in engine started kicking up water, motor stalled out, turned back on for a few seconds shut off again then flagged some 1 down for a tow, took back to house, shot air into the drain port, dirt came out, got the pump on and it pumped all the water out took about an hour or so

either way im taking it to a shop soon, just thought id post and see what you guys thought, owner said he changed the bellows and just had in the water a week ago, i didnt notice any over heating issues and the oil pressure was great on the gagues, i also need to get a dept finder has the factory one has been removed any suggestions ?

one of the bellows or rubber hoses DOES appear to be broken BADLY upon me looking at it but im not too familar with boats

The pic of the torn bellows looks like the exhaust bellows but that would not put water in the bilge, however you could have a torn driveshaft bellows (the one above the exhaust bellows) that can put water in the bilge for sure, but usually not that fast. Check all your cooling hoses especially the short one from the transom mount to the power steering cooler (behind the engine, hard to get at). You may have a bad seal round the transom mount but in any case you need to get to the root of the leak before the boat goes back on the water. One of the big problems with I/O power packages is that there are many places where they can leak water in and some can be tough to find. Sounds like you need to have the outdrive pulled, the driveshaft bellows checked, and replaced if there is any doubt to the condition of it. Other points to check are the gimble bearing and ujoints.

thanks for the reply, its hard to look by the upper bellow seems OK but again its hard to really look up in there, also is there any diagram of the transom mount, there is no gaskets where the metal meets the fiberglass also no seals, so idk how to determine if its sealed other than just testing it with water, is there suppose to be some kind of seal system or rubber

here is some additional pictures

below the drain plug there is a small chip in the white fiberglass but it doesnt really penetrate its not like i can stick anything in it or anything just the white coating is chipped off, what is this plastic white thing with a gray little tube running down ?

how bad is it for larger amounts of water to get up in the bilge where the motor is? is there some kind of safety switch to shut engine off or can major damage occur, like i said water level was about half way up and the engine shut down

That is very bad! It will ruin the starter and rot out the oil pan. You must get the leak fixed. Did you put this boat in the water before you bought it? Hope you can fine a good shop!

Is it possible that someone didn't put the block/manifold drain plugs back in? or didn't reattach the hoses? That's a lot of water in a very short time. I agree w/LouC that your starter may now be susceptible to seizing if it has filled with water. They can be rebuilt if you can find a small motor shop in your area. A new marine starter is probably >400 bucks. Repair is much cheaper (half or even less if you are willing to unbolt it and bring it to them) and is usually reliable if done right. Don't use a cheaper automotive one as they can spark and cause an explosion if fumes build up in your compartment. I've even know some people to have luck with smacking the starter with a paddle while on the lake to unseize it if it happens while you are out... I've tried it before but I've never gotten lucky yet.

Actually over the years I have bought 2 new marine starters for my 4.3 V6 and the most I paid was $175. I have an MES starter in it now that’s about 12 years old.
Water leaks in an I/O boat will cause expensive damages as I said. Sources include the driveshaft bellows, the exhaust Y pipe and it’s gasket, any raw water cooling hoses, and the inner seal inside the outer transom mount. Also wood rot in the transom itself can cause leaks.

That boat needs a new transom. I can tell just by looking at that drain plug stain that it's shot.

Honestly if there's that much water getting in, the stringers are almost definitely gone as well. That "chip" in the fiberglass is exposed weave and is extremely likely to absorb water.

It's more likely than not, that the entire boat's inner structure is water logged. Not safe to run it like that IMO.
