I put a new insert on my wiper blade, at the end of last season. Where it contacts the glass fully, it does a great job. In the middle though there is a donut sized spot that it doesn't get, leaving it VERY hard to see out.

Any ideas?

If it's the same as no mine, there are 2 adjustments. It took me a while to get the position right yesterday after refitting the wiper motor.

1. Where the arm is fitted to the wiper spindle ( splines and a locking grub screw underneath the plastic cover), this adjusts the wiper arm position at park.

2. The other end of the arm; the angle of the blade relative to the arm can be adjusted by slackening off the screw. This alters the way the blade moves across the screen.

Graham, did you replace your wiper motor? Mine is dead and a replacement is not cheap, so I may not replace it since I have never used it anyway.

I'll give it a look see. It works real well near its "parked" position, but at the other end it barely wipes.

I'd fix it...if you have a full canvas top its only a matter of time before you'll use it!

I thought that my wiper motor had died as well. I took it apart to find that a little moisture had crept in and corroded the electrical contentions. Cleaned them up and all is good.
Would not hurt to take a look.

I managed to repair my motor; fresh + salt water had run down the spindle and past the (incorrectly positioned !) seal and couldn't drain out of the drain channel on the motor box due to the orientation. One terminal of the three had been immersed and corroded away entirely.

The wiper arm has a grub screw retaining it on the spindle.The cover of the motor comes of easily after removing 6 or 7 screws if I remember right.I didn't need to dismantle the mechanicals of mine any further. The rivet holding the terminal was still in place so no water had actually entered the motor. I was able to drill out that rivet (carefully) and made up another internal wire with a ring terminal, which i attached to a new 1/4" spade teminal. I used a small brass nut and bolt to hold the terminal on the outside to the ring terminal inside, with a little silicone to make sure water could not enter the motor through the new connection.. ( I knew all these odd bits and pieces I have amassed over the years would someday come in useful). The 3 terminals on the motor are not 1/4", they are slightly smaller, so I replaced the relevent terminal on the wire with a 1/4" one. I also greased the gears in the motor whilst it was apart. It works fine now.

Graham, do you recall if the grub screw needed to be completely removed, or was loosening it sufficient? I loosened mine quite a bit but the wiper arm wouldn't budge. Maybe I need a gear puller.

It doesn't need to be completely removed, it's OK as long as it isn't still in contact with the shaft; it doesn't do any harm to remove it completely though (which is what I did, as I expected the arm/ spindle to be seized together).

The wiper arm and the shaft are splined, you may have some corrosion on the splines. I was lucky, despite boating in salt water they came apart quite easily. If your's are stuck, you could try some penetrating fluid. Also. the wiper arm where it fits onto the spindle has a hole in it; a sharp shock with a small parallel punch in the hole onto the spindle should just break the joint.
