I just bought a 1998 205 Sundowner with a volvo/penta 5.0. My drive seems to go up and down really slow, is this normal. From all the way down to all the way up it will take about 20-25 seconds. Also, what should I expect in top end with this engine setup. With about 400lbs of passengers the speedo reads 45mph and my gps read 51mph. That is right at redline on the tach. obviously got it there for just a sec. The boat seems that it has too low end of a prop on it. She does get out of the hole quickly with no hesitations. It has a 14 3/4 X 19 stainless prop as of now. I don't know much about props yet for this is my first boat. Pros and Cons of changing prop are welcome. Thanks for your help.

Only help I can be is with the drive going up and down. I know my FW with the VP drive was pretty slow as well. My Mercury goes up/down in half the time it took my VP so I would say probably nothing wrong there.

Had the same boat as yours except a 1999. I just do not put all my past boats in my signature  because who really cares. Best I got out of my boat was 51 mph like you are getting. That SX drive can struggle at times when my boat was loaded with people. We liked it and went on a two week vacation to the North Channel on it.

Yes, the drive is slow. All all your fluids full?
