My wife and I just purchased a 1992 225 Sundowner with a OMC 454 C.I. King Cobra (whatever that actually means) with 325+ hrs on it. Took it for a test drive yesterday and it was a lot of fun ... albeit with information overload from the current owner. The boat needs TLC inside and out, but we feel like got a fair deal. We plan to detail the boat this weekend and possibly get it out on the water, weather permitting. Aside from the cleaning it needs, I did find the steering to be more difficult than I expected ... like it was stiff or something. I thought it would steer like a car, maybe just uneducated and inexperience??? It was a little easier to steer when speeds were higher but lower speeds steering is tight!

I have a ton of questions and look forward to learning a lot from this community. :D Plan to post before and after cleaning pics this weekend.

Mike

Welcome
You've got an older boat and there are a few people here than can help you with outdrive questions (LouC is one). We all have some knowledge so can sometimes be of assistance... Remember to post pictures with your posts. It helps us "view" the words and will be appreciated by all.

I think you probably have the cone clutch King Cobra on that boat...about the steering...at least on the standard Cobra...a normal maintenance point is to grease the power steering actuator and to grease the steering ram..if this has not been done it should be and also make sure the power steering system has fluid in it and the belt is tight...

I looked at the parts diagram on http://www.dougrussell.com for this power package and I didn't see a grease fitting on the actuator as there is on my standard Cobra but greasing the piston where it goes into the cylinder should help and then if you can lube the cable that might help too...or the cable or helm control may need to be replaced....
I have power steering on my old 88 standard Cobra and it's very easy to spin the wheel around even at idle...
