My 1997 has the Volvo 5.7 Gi, 250 HP. Four Winns says top speed is 40-43 mph, I don't have GPS to confirm but I don't think I've ever gone that fast.

I just checked and Four Winns says different things in different brochures.
The sales brochures and the specs list different power ratings for the same engines.
From the spec. book here were 4 different 5.7L Volvo Penta ratings that year.
GL = 215 HP
GLi = 215 HP
Gi = 250 HP
GSi = 280 HP

His motor is an OMC, they may have had different power ratings.

True, I am wondering if the different rating are from HP at the crank vs. HP at the propeller shaft??

My '04 225 with the 5.7Gi/DP, F6 props, did 50 no matter what. Fuel/water didn't really matter. At least 50 per my GPS. I wish my 268 could do the same!

My 97 225 with the 5.7 GLi sx drive would do 44 mph on the GPS

After fixing my overheating issue I took it back out to the lake and ran the crap out of it. My 205 with 5.0 GL would do 48-50 WOT with the two of us, 3/4 fuel, and boat fully loaded. It was Labor Day around 5:30 pm with light chop and little boat traffic. Next time I get it out I will confirm with the GPS.

I am pretty pleased with the performance this boat gives out. I'm not big in to racing it but I can stay with up with the bigger engines that my boating buddies have.

I used to have a 2002 245 Sundowner with the 5.7L GSi and DP drive. I had it just over 65 MPH, but the trailer started to sway, so I had to slow down.

Seriously, though - I had it over 50 but I had about a quarter tank of gas and just me in the boat. I had just launched it, so I didn't have all the gear in it.

Now I have a 285 Sundowner and just after launch this year, I had it up to 52 MPH - again before all the gear was aboard.

Found a glassy section on Lake Michigan this past weekend. 2 bodies in the boat, 1/2 tank, did get to 47 on speedo. No problem hitting 40 with 7 in the boat. Had to keep playing with engine trim to find the magic spot, but have that figured out now.

Wife cranked 40 with me and a daughter on a Super Mable tube and 5 in the boat! Spray felt like pins and needles hitting us.

1996 195 sundowner 302 5.0 did 46 with 5 people, 1/2 tank and cooler. I also have a small chip in my prop. That's as fast as I want it to go.....

Not a sundowner, but thought I'd play anyway. Vista 328 (12,300 lbs!) fully loaded with fuel, but no water 2 people on board 71.6km/hr (so ~44-45mph) via GPS. Twin 5.7L, 280 HP each.

X2, I wouldn't think something that big would be able to run that quickly esp with only 5.7's. That would be an impressive sight seeing something that big moving that quickly. I bet it is barely using any gas at WOT, haha

2000 H180 3.0...factory sized prop

Just me in the boat, tail wind, fumes in the gas tank-- 38mph. It has the power to push a 23 pitch, I want to shoot for low 40s. Considering my good friend has a 454 Velocity that I GPS'd in the low 60's, it kinda sucks having a slow boat when he just takes off and leaves me behind. My next boat (205 sundowner) will have to be the 5.7gi engine that does 52+mph. No 220hp GL pig!!

lindeman, mid 40's is commonplace on 33+ foot express cruisers with those engines today. It does impress you when you are there live and in person.
Here is a tidbit from the way-back machine.......... Since this thread is 2 years old anyway.

cougarcruiser wrote:
Who'd a thought -- 47.2mph on the GPS!

Still breaking in the engines, but when AC/DC came on the radio - the wife already knew it was coming. I got as far as "hey honey!" - and with a shake of her head, we went from a gentle cruise at 3300 rpms (about 26mph) and throttled her up to just over 5000.

We were not fighting lake current... little/no wind... canvas was totally up. Gas was well over 3/4. Water was 3/4. And yes - there was even a fair amount of the "black water" in the holding tank.

Couldn't believe that when I got it all trimmed out - we saw 47.2 over GPS.

'97 245 with 250 hp 5.7Gi Sx 14.5x19 prop, 1/2 tank fuel, 1 adult, 2 kids. Got up to 38 mph gps, 4500 rpm. Lake was a little rough and I didn't have a chance to optimize the trim. Four Winns said 40-43 mph but with a 15x17 prop in their specs. Should be able to get a little more but to be honest I rarely push it that hard. If I want to go faster I'd get a different boat and spend a lot more on gas in the process.

my last boat: 1998 sundowner 205 with a 5.0GL 220hp and a sx drive with a 4 blade 19pitch 14.5 inch prop would go 45(gps) all day long with full fuel load and at least 3 people. I set up the carb and rejetted it with size 73 maim jets, and change the power valve to open with more ease. it really hammered after that and was very good on fuel. I went 48(GPS) with just me and my on one day but was 3/4 tank of gas that day

new boat 1996 vista 238 with a 5.0gxi270hp and DP drive with f5 stainless props and a full fuel and water load with 4 adults will do 40mph (gps)

very happy with the results of both
