Post subject:  Info on 195 Sundowner

Just got a late eighties Sundowner 195 with 3.7. After giving it a full tune up, fresh gas, oil change, fresh coolant she runs like a top however....along with putting fresh gas in it, discovered I have a hefty fuel leak. I removed deck to access tank, got it ready to lift out. Just in case the tank is rotted out I was shopping for a new tank. I was looking for info on the older S.D 195 and could not find anything. I went on the Four Winns website and their info goes back until 1988 however, a 195 sundowner was not listed so, I am wondering what years they made that model, fuel tank capacity, LOA, beam etc....
Anyone know a good place to get info on this old boat? Thank you

I imagine not much changed on the I/O version from 87' forward except for availble engines.

Fuel = 35 gallons
LOA = 20'2"
Beam = 7'4"

1992 was the first year of the 195 and that came with a 4.3 V6.

Incorrect. They made them from at least 1987.

You're right. In 1987 only they did sell a 195 Sundowner before the 1992 (re) introduction.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I have had it on the water once and I liked how it sat in the water and had a pretty good hole shot for a four banger. I have a bass boat and a 25' wellcraft for offshore so this is purely a fresh water "pleasure" boat for everything but fishing.
I pulled the tank last night and discovered a good little hole...couldnt find one the same size pre-fabbed so Im going to find a local welder. After I get 'er buffed and polished ill post some pictures. Interior needs to be redone as well though :roll:

The 195 was first introduced as a Horizon Cuddy in 1984.

They kept the Horizon name until 1987 when they changed all the cuddies to the Sundowner name.

In 1989 there was a 195 Freedom Cuddy.

The 195 Freedom was around until 1991.

The 195 Sundowner in 1992 is the same boat at the 195 Freedom of 1991.

After that they had the last 195 Sundowner which was around from 1993-1998.

:D Wow guys thanks again for the great info. I am trying to find a welder for the tank, getting some new stuff on the trailer and getting rid of the oxidation on the gel coat (gel coat is in surprisingly decent shape for its age).
I am excited to get it on the water to see how she'll do.
Any advice on these boats? Each boat seems to have a particular "thing" to it...are there any for the SD 195? ie...dont trim it too far down while WOT or...it slides through a turn instead of cutting...

From what I can tell, pretty much all Four Winns boats turn good. Mine will toss you out of the boat if you're not careful. Times are tough, call around. I know a local tig welder here that's really cheap that's done work for me on my motorcycle, so I'm sure you have someone like that around you. I would still shop around, there's plastic tanks in 1000s of sizes all over the net.

Trim? Pretty much all stern drives it's standard. From a stop = drive down. On plane or WOT = trim up to the point where it's not cavitating, but if you go any higher it is. I got rid of my trim gauge for something more important cause at least on my boat.. if the drive is too far down at cruise/wot it will spit up water next to the transom. When it's trimmed good those go away.

Ok, yeah because I have all outboard experience and I always look back at the motor to determine trim and where the water is hitting the hull (especially on my bassboat). I dont think my trim gauge works so I will definately keep that in mind as I look back...look for that spray as obviously an outdrive is tough to see :) Thanks again!!
