I have a 1998 238 vista four winns, how do I take the throttle out of gear when starting? It seems like it only has forward, netrual and reverse, I have a Penta 5.0 GL which is carbed, how do I pump the gas before starting?????

There will be a button in the middle of the throttle lever assembly (the round part on the bottom). Push the button while moving the throttle lever forward. This will "disengage" the gears in the drive and allow you to "pump" the engine like a car before starting. 2 pumps usually works for me.

Niagra has it spot on. The button in the center will put you in neutral if you push it in and hold before you slide the throttle forward. This should allow you to pump the throttle a few times before you turn the key and also keep the engine rev'd if needed until it stays running at idle.
