We launched on Thursday. We started up and all seemed fine so we start our short trip across the lake to the marina. 5mins in and I'm just at idle speeds to get to the channel when I noticed a progressively loud whine/squeal. Suddenly the starboard engine quits as well as the whine. I wait a minute and try the engine again and it starts up with no whine, actually it sounds great. But it's short lived and stalls within 10 seconds. I try it again with the same results.
Any ideas what's going on? Fuel pump? It 2001 Volvo 5.0Gi.

Sounds like the fuel pump, does the high pressure pump get hot as well?

Fuel pump. Especially if it is too hot to touch while making the whine.

You've probably got paint flaking off of the fuel pump assembly which will clog up the screens on your high pressure pump, fuel pressure regulator and/or fuel injectors. Your pump is burning up by trying to supply adequate fuel pressure through those restricted areas. One area you can check for paint is the surface that mates with the fuel filter, mine had obvious paint peeling.

I had what sounds like the same systems of what you are having and unfortunately had to replace the fuel pump. The pump was around $650.00. The mechanic found black paint on some screens and i believe in the fuel rail.
Volvo believes this is a non issue though.

Do you run ethanol because the one and only year that our club ran that government mandated piss water, I went through both fuel pumps?
