I own a 1988 245 Vista. My camper canvas was destroyed. I never liked it because, if I left it up, it rubbed the back of my neck when standing up driving. I'm thinking that I would like to just use a cockpit cover. Does anyone know if they are available for my old boat? There are additional snaps on the boat. I'm wondering if that was for an original cockpit cover.

I'm also wondering if it makes more sense to just buy some kind of universal Bimini. Would that cover the cockpit enough during the boating season? Would that not make sense since my structure/poles from the old camper top is still in good shape. I'm also not sure that I would want to drill too many more holes.

Thank you

In essence, all a camper canvas is, is side panels to turn a bimini into an all around enclosure. Usually consisting of 2 side panels, 1 back panel and 1 front panel. These all connect to the bimini top via zippers.

A cockpit cover is for when your done for the day, and are putting the boat away. It is what attaches to those snaps you were refering to. You can't use one when actually driving the boat :P .

You should already have a bimini if you have the camper canvas, unless that also got destroyed. If so, just get a new top made for your exiting poles.

I pretty much want it for after using the boat. Do you know the best place to buy a cockpit cover for an 88. I google searched it and not much came up. I also tried the Four Winns site but only newer showed up.

It is nice to have the shade of the camper. I was using the camper/bimini without the sides. I just don't like the set up being so close to the back of my neck while driving. If I do decide to stick with the same set up I'm wondering if they are available or would it be a local custom person. It's an old boat and I don't really want to spend a whole lot on it.

That old of a boat you may just need to have one made. You could watch Ebay or CL.

I would suggest going to a local canvas shop. They can help you out. I had a piece replaced for an old boat. Just gave them the old piece and they copied it. If the old one is destroyed you may have to bring the boat or have them come out.

Did the boat have that horrible slant back canvas?? Trying to figure out it rubbing on your neck. Our first boat came with that, and it was the first to go. We have full canvas up a good chunk of the time, and I wouldn't do it any other way. Ever get caught out in the rain, or a big storm sneaks up on you? You will be very thankful you have it.
