Greetings -- Finally getting around to de-winterizing the boat. 2004 Four Winns 268, 5.7Gi EF.
I was replacing the thermostat today and notice that it was different than last years. This years number is 3831426. My question is, has anyone else replaced their thermostat this year. When I started the engine on the muffs, the temp went up to 175, then crept up to 200, then back down to 175, then crept up again then back down. It almost seems like th thermostat is a 200 degree instead of a 175 degree t-stat. The risers were cold to the touch as were the hoses. Seems a little odd, is all. Let me know if you've experienced the same results.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, definitely need that thermostat. It's sticking and causing that fluctuation.

Same thing happened to me on the first run of the season. Mine stuck at 200 degrees I just put the motor in neutral and revved the motor a couple of times and went back down to normal temp and been fine ever since. Not sure if I answered your question correctly hope this helps.

Are you sure its the right one for the engine?
Another thing I have found helpful is to use an IR temp gun to monitor temps to verify that the gauge is working right. I find that I get 145-150 at the intake manifold right under the thermo housing and the gauge will say 160 or so.

This is what Im wondering!

I NEVER depend on the parts counter guy for the correct part, its a crap shoot at best. I google the model number of my engine (In my case 43FBPLKD) and a ton of OEM authentic Volvo Penta parts diagrams come up. I get the part number off of that, try to find the part on the web to make sure its still available, THEN I go to the parts counter. Searching it on the web will also tell you if the part has been superceded with a new part.

I dont hear of thermostats being updated very often; Im sure it happens but LouC and myself just want to make sure its not a goof up and you received the wrong t-stat.

I went this site first:
http://www.volvopentastore.com/Circulat ... _id.779577

Then took the part number to the parts store. The t-stat looked different from last year, that is for sure. I have the one from last year, I could put it in and see if I get the same results. I'd also, like to see what temp they have stamp on the t-stat while I am at it.

You could also test the t-stat buy putting it in hot water to see if it opens up. Just use a pot and a thermomator? and get it to the temp it would open at, and see if it opens.

On most VP engines and later Merc engines the raw water cooling thermostats are rated at 160 degrees...this will give a normal running temp of 160-175 degrees.....
