LouC. I was told by an older gent that was a fw mechanic for years ,that some of the early 89's had the same cables and some of the recalls were a orange color. other than the shift problem .the coil sheathing would stretch and eventually break. is that correct

Not sure about that but for sure the shifting problem was defective cables. Also befor they came out with the 3 special tools, the adjustment was tricky, not that easy to get right. With the tools it's much easier.

The photo shows serious dry rot cracking on your exhaust bellows. Cannot see the shift bellows clearly in the photo (the top one), but it's probably the same age. While it doesn't really matter if the bottom bellows leaks, it matters a lot if the top one does. I would replace them both right away.

Hey rpengr
Yea, that's the current plan. I ordered the shift cable tools today and a repair manual. Once I get that in, I will begin taking it all apart and see what needs to be replaced. Money is not something I have readily available so this is going to take a few weeks I think to fix. Luckily, Ive still got a few good months of boating weather left. You didn't see the worst of the exhaust bellows. Was a little embarrassed to show it. Pretty bad. It looked like the other one was in ok shape. no leaks

Well the exhaust bellows usually have slots cut in the bottom (presumably to let some water drain and not have to force it all out the prop if the engine is trimmed up). The exhaust is sealed inside the boat to above the water line, so it does not matter at all if the bottom bellows leaks, has big holes in it, or is missing altogether.

On the other hand, the upper (drive shaft) bellows in critical to keeping your boat floating, as well as preventing water from hitting the drive shaft + Universal Joints + Carrier Bearing + Engine coupler. Very important to keep the upper bellows in good shape.

Well I honestly couldn't figure out how this happened other than it was done on purpose. From what you just said I guess this may be normal then?
