You can check for engine codes with a paperclip and an LED light if you have the plug in for a controller. My old motor was a 4 bolt main and didnt think to ask but got a 2 bolt main when I bought remanufactured engine. Probably something I would ask for next time. You have to buy timing cover from merc or volvo, all the automotive stores have it for half the cost but my balancer rubbed the plug they give you. Paid 2x as much for the exact same cover that didnt have a hole drilled in it. Napa does carry plugs and plug wires that are marine grade. Website called boatinfo.com has service manuals for the volvo. Ill think of more.

Add a ball of twine, 2 sticks of juicy fruit, and a pen spring and you can build an official MacGyver bomb.

... Just sayin'.

What I've learned...
There are times when Stone Age tech is good to have simple ig system like we had 40 years ago and a carb that can just be swapped out no ECU/ injector/wiring BS. In a salt water environment unless you have very high quality connectors you will have issues . The terminals must be packed with dielectric grease like trailer lights.

Check engine lights and other mandated electronic annoyances are the bane of modern vehicles, I sure as hell don't want it in a boat.

Yes but when you have chased your ass in a circle for a while. It is nice to have a code to point you in the right direction with all the sensors we have now. Alex if you dont like the method then you can pay 50 bucks for the light bulb that plugs in. Its quick, safe and simple and its cost me 2.50 at radio shack. When you work on your own boat it gets expensive when you have to buy every special tool to use once or twice.

Not everyone is a jerk.

That is a total MacGyver, jerry rig, jimmy... Aka a clever solution to an otherwise complicated situation.

Sorry if I took it the wrong way. It's been a long couple weeks swapping the motor out after work.
