I would check http://www.dbelectrical.com before I purchased. I have had very good luck with them thru the years.
At least it is an on option.

I did some more research on the issue of the sense circuit and how it should be properly wired. What I learned is that the best way is to hook up the sense circuit to the common terminal on your battery switch because that's as close as you can get to sensing true battery voltage. While the jumper between the B+ on the alt and the S terminal on the Alt works fine, going directly to the common terminal avoids any possible voltage drop in the wiring between the starter solenoid and the alt....

Thanks again Lou, this is not a repair I feel comfortable doing myself. Mostly because I cannot determine what is the correct alternator to buy as I cannot find a part number on the alternator (mostly due to where its mounted) So I am leaving it up to my mechanic...but haven't been able to reach him yet. I was going to just trust the part number and order one, but all this talk is making me question that theory.

Is yours an OMC Cobra or the joint venture Volvo SX?
I just got my OE part # off of the BRP OMC parts website and got the cross ref to the Arco#. if yours is an OMC look it up there if it's a Volvo look it up on the Volvo parts online site.
Since this was the joint venture product the Alts are likely to be the same exact part but check again.

It's the Volvo SX Cobra drive. Not sure how I'd find an alternator at Volvos site? Am I missing something?

Now I understand the question. Mine is an OMC Cobra...so that site doesn't recognize this number. Sorry Lou I didn't understand the question before. I thought you were asking about the outdrive for some reason. So how do I find the alternator for this model if you don't mind me asking? I went to Crowley...but not wanting to get it from there since they over $400 for it.

You go on the site for BRP catalogs because BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) is who bought the assets of OMC after the bankruptcy. Then you select 'sterndrive' and search under your year for the model number you have. As it turns out your engine package is actually a 1995 not a 1996. Then you click on the model number and it gives you a drop down of categories. Then select what you need, 'alternator'. It gives you the part number which is...

3854809
and as we know from the previous discussion, that crosses to an Arco #60125
same one I got.
If you want try looking it up yourself, its the only way to make sure of the correct part numbers. You shouldn't be paying more than 125-140 for this. I do business with local boat shops who order directly from the manufacturer.

try this link to the brp catalog.
Crowley has the same info but their catalog won't work on my computer for some reason...
