Hi all,

I am looking at the 318 as my strongest option for my next boat. What do you think about the 5.0 vs 5.7 vs MC350 options? Would the 5.0 / 270hp be under powered? Based on manufacturer consumption figures, it would seem sensible. Not sure what 5.7/280hp really adds in benefits, just higher fuel burn? In Finland gas is pretty expensive so have to consider consumption... On the the underhand annual hours spent cruising are not that high but...

Any thoughts on Vista 318 vs Sea ray 320? For some reason I keep coming back to that option...

Cheers, The Finn

On bigger boats it is all about torque instead of top end hp.
The 5.7 will be a better choice.
As far as Merc vs Volvo, it is really a personal preference and availability of dealer service.
I personally like Merc but that is because I have owned them all my life and know how to service/work on them myself.

As for the four winns vs sea ray, it really comes down to layout that suits your needs and dealer availability. Both are good boats.

I have been to Finland several times. Helsinki, Tampere, Kokkola, and several smaller places up north. What part are you from?

Thanks for your input!

You've been around Finland then quite a bit! I'm from Helsinki, but our summer cottage and boating is on lake Päijänne just 100miles up north.

I have sold my previous boat and it feels very odd here at the cottage with a boat!

I have twin 5.0 270hp Volvos in my 288 vista. I know it is a smaller boat than the 318, however I will say my boat gets up on plane, fully loaded, without effort, and without trim tabs. Also, it tops out at around 50mph.

I would suggest these same engines would be well suited in a larger boat like the 318.

I own a 328 2000' with twin 5.0 GI. I feel her underpowered.
If you have the choice, go to 5.7, it will be much more confortable.

No issues with the 5.0s in my 318. Would I like the 5.7s - sure. When I bought, I bought the best boat on the market at the time. We run just fine with the 5.0s - cruise about 28mph. The boat does not feel under powered, but as always, more power is always welcome.

Should read "We bought one of the least expensive boats on the market at the time" There were better boats out there
when you took the plunge. But it ended up working out, so that is a good thing.

Wow. Do you wait around all day waiting for me to post?

To the OP - You'll know when you find the right boat. Sometimes the best boats have the best price as well...

Seems very douchebaggish. Is douchebaggish a word?

Not at all. I just have a good memory, and was in Fort Myers and saw his boat in person before he bought it. I would expect nothing
less from Fire than to claim his boat is/was the best.

Well, it's pretty hard to buy the best boat...
- If you spend $200 million on a yacht, there will still be about 10 better out there.
- It takes about $1.4 billion dollars to buy an Oasis class cruise ship

I agree. Most expensive is not always best, and least expensive is not always best. What fits your needs and
budget is most important.

I don't think you'll see much difference between Merc and Volvo. The 5.7 does put out more torque than the 5.0 and torque is what moves heavy boats. In Europe a diesel would make the most sense as I'm sure you've already considered but then the cost factor is much high than with gas engines. The standard GM small block is a great engine and will last a long time provided that it is propped appropriately and the exhaust system is maintained. Salt, brackish or fresh water? If in salt I might go Merc just to get the dry joint exhaust system. Definitely one of their better ideas. Also see which engine maker has best parts and service back up where you are.
