I have a 2006 V-P 5.7 GXI that has a drip behind the harmonic balancer. I thought it was the raw water pump but I pulled it and it is in perfect condition. I reached behind the balancer and it is all wet. It happens when running and after running it. I will go down to the boat on Wed with a mirror on a stick but any advice would be helpful.

In stead of a mirror, I have been using my cell phone camera to see areas that are hidden from view. Maybe try a selfie stick for hard to reach places.
Good luck.

If its not your raw water pump, it could be the bearing and seal on your front circulation pump starting to go bad, they also will make a grinding noise when the bearing wears out.

Yes, try using tissue paper to find what is wet above the harmonic balancer. Could be the main circulating pump, gaskets, or hose connections up to the thermostat housing.

Anything leaking behind the harmonic balancer would be oil (not water).

Thanks for your reply's. It is definitely not oil. I like the cell phone idea, mine has a flashlight so it will work great.
I will report back tomorrow. I have a pro coming on Fri. so if I don't find it or it is too big a job I will let him do it.
I do a lot for a guy in a wheelchair but sometimes I just have to let go.

It's almost certainly the recirculation pump. It has a "weep hole" in the casting and when the seal start to go bad water drips down out of that hole. On a raw water cooled engine the pump is exposed to lake/ sea water and associated grit. The marine pump had a stainless steel backplate and a bronze impellor..

I had one go on my first Sundowner on it's third season, after only one season in salt water before I fitted closed cooling. The recirculation pump on my second Sundowner lasted 9 + years ( until I sold it) but that always had closed cooling

The one on my '88 did not need to be replaced till it was 22 years old...even with being in salt water for a long time by then. Got a Sierra aftermarket one for about $90 and bolted it up. Works just fine just have to get the old pulley off...

+1

Mine lasted 20 years in my OMC, but when the seal goes it leaks out of that weep hole.

I changed my recirculation pump on the Horizon 2 years ago as preventative maintenance. It was not leaking, but I changed it because I had all the rear seating out of the boat while rebuilding the raw water pump with new bearing/seal.

I replaced the raw water pump and tried to get a look at the drip today but still can't see exactly it is coming from. Due to my physical limits I will have to wait for the pro. Thank's again for the replys.
