Guys - I think this has been covered before but I can't find where so I thought I'd raise it again. Not sure what the FW engineers were thinking when they designed the door to the transom locker but as others have pointed out, it is prone to collecting a lot of water when it rains. I have removed the shelf in there and rigged it up to hold lines and other things but really can't live with it collecting an inch of water in the bottom every time it rains. The scupper drains seem about useless.

I'm trying to think of possible solutions. The most obvious one would be to put some sort of "visor" over the top of the locker so water would either run around the sides or drop off the visor away from the opening.

Anyone else come up with a better solution? Brad

My dealer installed rubber weatherstripping around the door and it seems to have helped.

I plan on trying some weather stripping or similar compressible gasketing. A visor would be to complex for me.

Guys - you're talking about weather stripping inside the seal? I'm sure that would help - I was thinking about trying to prevent the water from getting there alltogether. Probably weatherstripping is the best choice - I'll give it a try.

I'm thinking weatherstriping stuck to the boat inside the locker, so the door will close on the striping and make a seal. Let's face it some water will still get in but the big water should flow around.

This may not be the best answer but it's cheap and harmless if it doesn't work.

I've got a couple sections of weatherstripping sitting here at home waiting for me to take the time to experiment on the boat. I'm thinking of using what's sold as "garage door" weatherstripping to create some sort of flap. Either on the transom or on the door itself. I'm not sure regular weatherstripping just stuck to the lip of the transom opening will be sufficient. Perhaps this weekend...

When you mention scuppers, where do yours drain? My 348 has two holes in the floor that drain to the bilge (via the lip of the engine compartment). They aren't all that great. But I think the problem is that even a slight bit of water in there ends up getting funky due to the nature of it being a closed box in direct sunlight. That and the surface of the floor is pretty rough. Mine actually has the white paint peeling in one spot. I'm thinking that if I have to get it repainted I'd be inclined to have it faired so it's smoother and sloped better towards the drains.

We do like the top-opening design. For docking it makes it much easier to get the lines out from the safety of the transom seating. That instead of having to go out on the platform, raise the door and reach under it. But a better method for keeping the water out would be a welcome improvement.
