Denatured alcohol in the USA is methelated spirits in other parts of the world. Most boat stoves use this.
Basically it is ethanol, drinking alcohol, mixed with a little bit of methanol to poison it. Ethanol is very cheap to make, but because you can drink it for fun, it's heavily taxed. So if you add a little methanol, it's still cheap, but it's not drinkable and not taxed as booze. But it is very poisonous.

Thanks for the reply Giaccamo.I think the Soot Free denatured alcohol is a big ask in Australia, so Ill stick with metho.

We generally do not use the cooktop, for the same reason of not wanting to stink up the cabin. That and since we have the electric cooktop it'd mean putting up with the racket of the genset running. The microwave is faster and works great with one of these small pots:

We use it to steam all sorts of veggies. There are a number of other microwave-oriented cookers too. An omlete maker works reasonably well, as does a quesadilla maker. Neither are as good as those made in the traditional fashion but they're still plenty tasty. I have made toast using the Magma but unless I've left the grill up from the night before it really seems like overkill. The admiral keeps threatening to make me find a way to make pancakes. I shudder to think about the hassle of getting batter out of the carpets...

It would be handy to have one of those combo toaster over/microwave units. If/when our microwave dies I'll certainly look into getting a combo unit to replace it. But I don't know if any exist that would fit the rather small space in the cabinet.
