Cracked open the new 318 today and started filtering through stuff and making my normal punchlists of stuff to figure out.

Something that was odd to me - but probably expected.

Down in the shore power closet at the stern - there are 2 30-amp receptacles. Is this a receptacle for heat/ac and another one for everything else? I presume so...

question though -- my moorage situation only gives me a single 30 amp receptacle.

I found y adapters for sale... but 250 bucks! YEOUCH!

what's everyone else doing on their Vistas? Why didn't FW just put in a single 50 if this was the case?

Any ideas?

Why two receptacles?
If you turn everything on, Air Conditioner, stove, water heater, microwave, battery chargers, pumps, stereo. TVs and lights, then plig in a hair dryer, the boat will draw more than 30 amps.

Since we can only have 30 amps at the dock, I can pop the breaker by turning everything on. I really have to try to do this. We never use the stove so that helps.

Do a Google search for "Charles Marine A3030Y30", this is a good quality 30/30/30 adapter and is much cheaper than Marinco. I have had mine for 2 years now with no problems and the marina owner here also bought some for himself.

Your boat should have come with two power chords, so what I do is connect the Y adapter to the boat and run 1 power chord to the dock. When I leave the dock I just unhook the chord from the adapter and leave the adapter connect inside the panel. This way you can keep your extra power chord on the boat somewhere and you will always have your adapter if you go somewhere

Your surmise is correct. One is heat/AC & the other is house. You're right in thinking the y adapters are pricey. There is a place near Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, MI called Wolf's that has a lot of used pieces and parts. You might get lucky there.

Generally speaking (as you need one any way, Cougar), a splitter is a good thing to have if you cruise with twin 30A power as you will eventually run into a marina that only has single 30A or single 50A service. I travel with a twin 30 to single 50 splitter and have used it several times. As far as having the twin power setup as opposed to single 50A service, there are a few reasons this is done on smaller boats, but if you have ever handled a 50A shore power cord without the benefit of a motorized cablemaster (commonly known as a Glendenning after one of the most common brands) you'd be happy you have the much lighter, more manageable 30A cords. Your next boat will have the 50.

And consider investing in a shore power zip sleeve cord cover to conceal your power cord(s) and cable TV cord. It allows for a neat and clean cord setup and makes it much easier to manage all of the cables. If you stern-in, it's much cleaner than having a mass of yellow cables spooled on the dock. I bow-in so it keeps the cords off my starboard side deck where they would otherwise accumulate dirt...
