 Post subject: Radar Arch air bubbles

I have a 2005 Vista 288 with the alum. radar arch. I have started to notice air bubbles forming underneath the paint on the top of the arch and smaller bubbles where the arch attaches to the hull. What is the recommended repair for this situation???

I have a 2005 298 and have the same problem. I will be curious to see what remedies have been made/will be recommended.

Since they are aluminum they are most likely powder coated. They would have to be chemically or abrasive stripped and re powder coated in the correct color.

You have an aluminum arch on your 298?? :? I thought they were all fiberglass.

your are correct. I have a fiberglass arch too. But... the center access cover and speaker mounts are aluminum and all are peeling.

Sounds like poor paint adhesion in the first place. Maybe they had a problem with the primer. The only way to repair it properly would be to sandblast or beadblast down to raw metal, prime with the proper primer and repaint.

I just noticed the same bubbles at the bottom of the aluminium arch on my 378. I would be curious how many others have found the same problem.

I have the same problem on my 05 298. It has an aluminium arch and I have been told it would need to be removed for repair. Approx cost $1,000 Australian. Cheers from downunder, slimdem

Welcome to aluminum, paint, water, and time. Here in the NW we have lots of aluminum boat that are painted, just about everyone of them has bubbles in the paint. As you get electrolysis under the paint the gas that is let off bubbles the paint. Poke the bubbles and release the gas so it doesn't keep expanding.
