Good point .... being a trailer-boater, that does not come right to mind.

Lots of discussion regarding prop spinning on the hub- is that even possible on the 06 duoprop?? When I would pull mine off I don't recall ever seeing any thing that could give way except the teeth on the shaft or props themselves. You strip those and you will know it is my guess.

If the boat is actually only reving to about 2500 rpms then I bet you are triggering the safe mode OR your throttle control position sensor is going just like mine did. You don't actuay have a cable to your throttle body but instead to the TPCS which then tells how much to open the throttle body. It's electrical and if it's going bad you will get erractic throttle control with a seemingly smooth running engine

you could also have a bad fuel pump or fuel filter. I highly doubt it's drive related. Try and rev your engine with not in gear when it's doing it and see what kind of response you get. I'll be out friday if you want to check it out. Btw, Kents does a good job but not sure of they work on Volvos.

You guys are correct it could be the throttle sensor, I didn't get that it is a DP and that the RPM didn't increase I must read better  , they may be different from a standard outdrive. I have just had to many props spin so that was my first thought.

The duo props can spin on their hubs...I just replaced my hubs last spring.

At first I was thinking props spining on hubs, but with no increase in RPM, I now think fuel starved. This would be possible to perform one day and not the next.

6 + adults on a boat is a HUGE load, boat will not perform anywhere what you are used to with just 2 adults and one small child.

I found on our last boat I had to prop down if we had more than 4 adults and I wanted the same hole shot performance for water sports. This was on our last boat with 7.4L motor single prop.

All Props have rubber insert between the hub and the body of prop, this is to give way and prevent damage to outdrive (supposedly)
The rubber insert can rot over time, and eventually allow prop to spin under heavy loads. Inserts can be replaced to fix problem.

I believe he has sort of tried this already.

When the outdrive was disengaged (neutral), the engine revved and performed as would be expected.

On my old 88 Horizon I had a couple of problems that were similar...it was OK the first year....then the second year the engine would not plane out the boat...went through the ignition system...all OK there....then took it to the mechanic...he found a corroded anti siphon valve on the gas tank was restricting fuel flow and there was some water in the gas in the carb....then it was much better....and I also found out that the V-6 Cobras on this boat are were supposed to come with a 15x17 prop instead of the 14.6x19 it came with...when I changed to the lower pitch prop it really woke up its performance...it jumps up on plane now and easily reaches its max rpm....

Interesting chain of events... to me, sounds like the engine is way down on torque (lack of power under full load) and the most likely cause of this is lack of fuel in my too many years experience racing Chevs...

Most likely causes - blocked fuel filter, or blocked fuel tank vent. Simple way to see if it is the fuel tank vent is take the fuel cap off and give it a run. If there is no change, then put a new fuel filter on it. If not either of these, then maybe the fuel pump, but not too likely.

Just my thoughts on what you described and the way it instantly appeared...

Thanks for all of your thoughts guys!

I have not been able to get back out to the boat yet, but will probably be heading out there tonight or tomorrow.

After reading all of your thoughts, I'm thinking that my problem is one of two things: (a) a fuel flow issue, clogged filter; or (b) a sensor tripping and causing the boat to run in "safe" mode.

I don't think it's a prop pitch issue because of the intermittent nature of the problem under the same conditions. I know that 6 adults is a big load, but at points the boat did just fine getting up on plane with that many people. At other points, it wouldn't. The fact that the RPMs stayed in the same range also tells me it's not a prop issue, and probably not the prop spinning on the hub.

With that said, I am nowhere near as experienced as most of you fellas are, so keep me posted if you have any other thoughts or disagree with my thoughts.

With any luck, OhioLakeRat and I can get this dilemma solved.

Thanks!

Your thoughts are sound. With the intermitent nature ... and the factthat it did not do this before.

Does not appear that it would be:

Prop pitch

Prop hub slip

Bottom growth

We have the 280HP-DP with F4 props. With 8 to 10 people on board, it will still plane (with full down tabs) .... takes a bit longer, but never feels as if it is not going to come out of the hole. With a paltry 4 to 6 people, I really don't have to use tabs, but is is faster with the tabs.

Andy my gut is on a fuel filter. If it were in safe mode, my guess would be you should hear an alarm sound. Did you ever get it up to WOT?

Swap out the fuel filter, thats your cheapest fix, and go from there. Have fun on the water tonite.

I wish I could use my boat, its still all shined up from last weekend, but its sold and I can't use it :(

Thanks, Gordon! Good to know I'm not too crazy.

No audible alarm, which I find odd if the boat were operating in "safe mode", but there is a "Fault" light that I noticed flashing on the circuit panel in the cabin. Anybody know that light indicates? Would there be an alarm?

I'm leaning towards the throttle sensor because if it were fuel-related, it would be a lot more erratic than it is. When it does act up, it stays consistently at 2,500 - 3,000 RPM.

I'm going to dig around tonight and I'll let you know what, if anything, I'm able to figure out.

Thanks gang!

When it seems that it's in safe mode...are there any other indications...like low oil pressure or high water temp? Engine pinging?
As far as fuel restrictions....I'd take off the water seperating fuel filter and empty its contents into a clear glass jar....let it sit....and see if there is a layer of water on the bottom or junk from the tank on the bottom of the glass jar...if so you may need to get the gas tank cleaned out. If you remove the access panel for the tank, you can see the gas gauge sender (round fitting with wires hooked up) if you remove that (carefully don't make sparks!!) you can see into the bottom of the tank...
