Okay.....so, I go check out my genset, trying to find where the impeller is located.....the manual is pretty much zero help. So, I call Kohler..get a service tech who looks up in the service manual and apparently, it is located to the right of the main panel (which faces the starboard engine).
Your owners kit should have included a full set of manuals for everything on board. Mine came with a set of Kohler docs. Along with factory manuals for everything else (microwave, radio, engines, AC, etc).
You can download manuals online. Here's a few links to visit for them:

This one's good for overall genset servicing info:

http://www.marinegenerators.info/kohler/lit/tp5573.pdfI'm assuming you have a soundshield on it, right?
The impeller on the 5E series is located at the same end as the genset control panel (at box on the top). Refer to the above PDFs for side-view diagrams. You do not need to remove the longer soundshield side panel, it's the short side you're interested in here for the impeller.
On that side there's a small access panel that pops out. There's a raised lip you pull to release the panel, then it slides out. I don't have pictures, sorry. There should be a large (1-1/8") hose coming out near that panel. On the 348 that hose really gets in the way... Once that panel is off you'll see four bolts that hold a plate onto the seawater pump. The impeller is inside that. Loosen and remove those four bolts (I think they were 11mm). Once they're off you'll see the impeller. Also note there's an O-ring on the pump. Impellers kits come with both the impeller AND the o-ring. It's a good idea to replace them both at the same time.
So I'm wondering if you're looking at the correct end of the genset. That exhaust hose requires a pretty fair amount of room to get out of the side of the box. I've never seen the engine room in a 318 but I'd find it very hard to imagine they'd put that end of the genset so close as to make it impossible to service the impeller. If you'd take a few pictures of your setup we might be able to better help (use photobucket.com to host them).
The 348 has the genset on the port side. The water heater is on the starboard side, tucked TIGHT under the starboard cockpit seating. It's is very difficult to get at the whole heater. That is, until you remove the seating box above the heater. The WHOLE section comes up. You have to remove the upper seat back, then the hinged seat bottom and then you can unscrew and lift out the whole base. Yes, it seem extreme. But it makes it MUCH easier to get to the stuff on the starboard side of the engine room. Here's two pictures of mine:
