Thanks. I'm in freshwater lakes, and keep the boat in the water. After last season, I had the bottom acid washed to remove the gunk.

I have a question about bottom paint. I bought a 2000 248 vista last summer. The 248 has bottom paint. When washing or should I say the first time I thought of washing the painted surface the stuff came off. I accidently hit it with a pressure washerr and it came off down to what I think must be the barrier cote. It is a baby blue color. I have all the service records and it states that in 2000 they used 1 gallon of blue "SUPR Bottomkote" with 1q of black to darken. Would this be the ablative type because it comes off when scubbed? Also I would like to touch up the area I messed up but can't find out what type of paint it is?
Any help or suggestions would be great.

Mike

Super Bottom Kote is an ablative paint made by Interlux, and typically used in high-fouling areas (zebra mussels and such). You can learn more at http://www.yachtpaint.com or by calling them. They should be able to suggest the correct method for dealing with your situation. It's very important to follow the right prep and application steps, regardless of paint brand.

So you're saying you washed something off and got down to a blue colored paint? I take it the top surface was black or a darker blue? Yes, an ablative paint will come off if you scrub it hard or pressure wash it. I only have mine lightly scrubbed when taking it out for a high-speed run doesn't sufficiently clear the gunk off.

It's common to use different colors of paints between coats. This helps you see when the top layer has worn off, revealing the differently colored coats below. I've got black then red ablative layers, with a blue barrier beneath them. If I start seeing the red it means time to repaint the black ablative. If I see blue then it's REALLY time to reapply.

Thanks Bill.... I will give the Interlux hotline a call. Did not see the SUPR Bottomkote on the compatability chart and I spoke with the dealer that put it on and they could not tell me 100% the manufacturer of the paint

Well, Interlux made a Super Bottom Kote. Unless the dealer wrote something entirely bogus, that would be my best guess. Some paints are more compatible than others. Some are specifically noted as totally remove, prime or just lightly sand. So knowing what's actually on there can make a big difference. Between just scuffing it and touching it up, versus having to remove it all. Big $$$ difference.

Mine is at the shop getting a bottom job now. Quoted $1850 for Power wash, sand, strip old paint, chemical etch fiberglass, check for blisters, and four coats. First coat is undercoat and then 3 coats of paint. Also have a hundred different things being worked on, so I'm getting a little anxious about the bill slowly is getting higher.

UPDATE:

I was able to get the antifouling paint put on last week by a small local TN boat maintenance company. The cost was $34/ft which was by far the best quote I got and hauling the boat cost $300 for the round trip. In addition the company changed out drive oil, checked engine alignments, gimbal bearings, u joints, and bellows.

Most often they were using black Petit Hydrocoat, the same used by Sea Ray. I asked them to raise the bottom paint line in the rear of the boat by ~2" too to match the water line. Overall I am extremely please with the result. The paint is relatively hard and looks great and the boat planes faster and picked up about 5 mph per the GPS at higher power settings. :D

Thanks to everyone for the advice!
