I used the boat on Sunday and no problems. I have 3 batteries. One house battery and two starters. The starters are two years old and have always held a charge between 12-14v, and did also this past Sunday. Went out today and the port engine would not turn over. According to gauge, I have under 5v. The other two batteries each have 14v. Why would the charger not charge all three.

Now last Sunday when I was closing up, I accidentally turned off the breaker for the charger in the cabin panel. I immediately switched it back on. Is there a reset button on charger itself? Both starter batteries were replaced at the same time. What am I missing?

I was able to turn on the engine by turning the battery switch to parallel

Are there individual inline fuses on the wires to each battery?

Not sure about the fuses. I'm going out there this afternoon to check everything out.

The bilges are connected to the house battery.

Kent I thought about this a little more after talking to you on Saturday night. It is certainly possible that one (or more?) cells of the suspect battery has given up the ghost. I have a regular battery charger (not an onboard model) that you are welcomed to borrow to see if you can revive it or not.

I was thinking the same thing. On Sunday I was getting 13.6 volts when tested on the bad battery. I was also getting 13.2 volts on the good battery. I'm just assuming that there just isn't enough amps in the battery to start the engine. So I'm going to replace the two starter batteries tomorrow since they are three yrs old anyways. Still going to borrow a load tester to see anything is draining them that I'm not aware of., and hopefully be done so I can enjoy the weekend.

If you are testing the battery at 13.6 at the battery with a voltmeter across positive and negative, then I doubt it is a bad battery. It is more likely a poor/loose/corroded connection at the battery or engine. It could be either the positive or negative cable causing the problem.

Before replacing the batteries, take them into Pep Boys, or some other auto store to have them load tested. They'll be able to tell you if the batteries are shot or not.

What type of batteries are they - wet cells?

Thanks for the advice. I actually replaced both starters yesterday and seemed to take care of the problem. The batteries were just under 3 yrs old and were the maintenance free ones. I figured they were getting old and would need to be replaced soon anyways. Seems like it worked but will be paying attention this holiday weekend. Think that there were not enough amps to start even though I had plenty of volts.
