Gents,

I've read a few threads where some folks have had the issue of the headliner breaking loose in the cabin. Seems to be happening to me now. I've pushed it back up a few times (seems to be velcro-like).

Went to WM today and got some 3/8" #8 panhead screws and some plastic covers. Does this sound like it should work or should I have gotten 1/2"? 1/4" looked awfully small ...

I think I may have used a 5/8 or even a 3/4 long screw, can not remember. Make sure to drill a pilot hole and DO not go through the deck.

how did the healdiner work out and which size screws did you use? I am having the same issue with my 298. I thought about just getting upholstery tacks but I figured they would not hold for long. Screws sound the best but I worry about drilling through the deck so the length of the screw is important.

Just check the width of the deck coring and buy screws that are not that long. Should be pretty straightforward.

Thanks Capn for the advice, it is straightforward, I was just looking for his experience with it. Some more advice might be if I go through the deck the screws are too long right.

I have the screws (3/8") but I have not put them in yet. Since one of the other posters was using 1/2" - 5/8" when he did it, I would think that given the thickness of the vinyl, padding and the deck itself, you are safe with 3/8" screws. Just be careful when you drill the pilot hole ...

they use a lot of velcro in there so I put in some of that heavy plastic locking velcro that 3m makes and that worked. Had to get shallow staples and staple it in. I had a lot of it down when i was installing the windlass and spotlight though..

We used short screws and plastic caps. I suggest that you take careful measurements of the ceiling before you start. We could feel a "step" in the ceiling where the plywood coring was placed. Toward the outer edge of the ceiling there was no coring. The screws should go into the coring at least a few inches from the "step". I used a little wax on each screw to lubricate the screw holes because the fiberglass covering the coring does not compress as easily as the wood. Establishing a center line inside the boat will help place the headliner screws in a consistent pattern. My wife builds stained glass widows so I just left the boat for a few hours and let her do the layout design. There is no need to get the screws extra tight.
