Hi I am looking at installing and In-hull transducer rather than the thru-hull model in a vista 348. Has anyone used this successfully as I not sure whether the engine bay floor has any balsa in it or is it just the stringers. The in hull one I like because you dont drill thru the hull and you can adjust to the deadrise. Any opinions. Cheers

I am by no means an expert but last year I was looking for the same thing and finally ended up upgrading the thru hull. From what I could find out, the engine compartment where your thru hull is probably installed now is two layers and you would never get a good reading with the in hull.

If the engine compartment on your 348 is anything like my 338, finding a good spot where you are at the actual hull without the inner lining would be tough.

I upgraded my C80 with the new transducer, DSM module and now have an accurate depth finder with water temp and actual contour.

I currently have a thru hull transducer installed but being an older "smart" sensor it is not compatible with the DSM30 (which the boat didn't have on purchase). I may have to lift the boat in a couple of weeks so I might not cut corners and rip the old one out. What Transducer did you use? Given the deadrise of the boat (mine is installed directly in front of the port motor) did you use a "tilted" transducer. I imagine your 338 would be identical. The older smart sensors are useless as a fish finder as the only do depth (so I'm told) hence the upgrade.

I was just going to call Raymarine to figure out why my sea temp is always off. I mean like way off. it reads in the 200 degree range.

Jnizi, when you say upgrade is that becuase the factory transducer is a cheap one? I can see that being a real chore to change standing on your head to reach it!

I just changed the house battery last week and stil have the cuts and bruises to prove it!

I recently inquired about an in-hull transducer on my 268 and was told the same. There is an inner bilge liner and in-hulls will not work.
