Past post ==

Sorry to drift the thread a little, but could someone please take the trouble to explain what is meant by " group 27 or 29 " when referring to batteries. I have been reading post's on this topic for a few years and it means nothing to me. We mustn't use the terminology over here, or at least I've never heard of it.

Other than the physical size of the battery, generally speaking, the electrical characteristics will change too.

So if we look at wet cells alone, the bigger the battery in size (hxwxd) the more CCA (cold cranking amps) & amp hours it has. A group 27 will out last a group 24 battery, all thing being equal.

Now a group 24 AGM battery will have better electrical characteristics than a group 24 wet cell. It cost more, same wight (general speaking), BUT give you the out put of a bigger wet cell and more.

Thanks for the explanations, however it still remains a "total fog" to me I'm afraid. Capt's chart shows a 26 is smaller than a 24, a 34 is smaller than a 33 :?
Maybe I'm just thick :)

I recently bought this starting battery, what group would this fall into?

To further confuse you........
Based on the Bosch dimensions of 353mm Long x 175mm Wide x 190mm High
That would be a Group 49, per this here chart.

I just bought my new batteries at Wal-Mart....that's what the previous owner had in there and they lasted 6 years. Installing them shortly.

Good choice. Wally World or Sam's Club. Good batteries, Good prices and they last. For the price, and properly maintained, Lead Acid batteries are all you need.

I THINK part of the problem is that you are from thr U.K. and we might be using U.S. terms. At this piont I would say, talk to the other boaters at your club or marina. Find out what they do or use. These charts from the past post are in inches not centermeters.

Uhh....... both of the charts in the "past post" are in inchs AND in millimeters. mm= millimeters. :roll:

Lets try this explanation. In North America, a Battery Council International (BCI) group number (e.g., 24, 27, 31, 49, etc.) is based on the physical case size, terminal placement and terminal polarity. In Europe, the EN, IKC, Italian CEI, and German DIN standards are used and in Asia, the Japanese JIS standard is used.
