i have read switching from 1, 2 & both is ok as long as you do not pass through 'off'.

That is mostly true but you need to make sure there is continuity on your particular switch as you pass through the various settings.

FYI
I have the Visa 238 1999
The Guest Charger also has fuses in it that can be replaced but they recommend you send back to them if it isn't charging the batteries. I got a new charger 2611A GUEST. Havent installed yet boat out of water. Will use the new Guest to charge batteries which I take out of the boat for the winter.
Also
I took the old three prong cable that hooks into the boat on the side which is normally where you plug into at a dock with power.
Cut the end of a put a heavy duty two prong plug with a ground and just plug the boat in at the house and using the Guest Charger.
