Which outdrive do you have? IIRC, on my DP-S it was behind the props. If you put in the upper oil screws before removing the pump, it will slow the amount of fluid that flows back out that bottom hole.

Thanks! I have the DPS drive. Had no idea it was behind the props! Do you have to take the props off to get to it? I don't see a screw on the drive near the bottom...

Like Firecadet & acguy said it is behind the props and is easily drained into a pan placed underneath. If I remember correctly I think the drain plug is a 10mm allen bolt. There is a special prop tool to get the inner and outer nuts off to remove both props.Pull the dipstick out of the top to allow it to vent as it drains. Then pump the gear lube up through the bottom using a threaded handpump checking the dipstick as it fills. There always seems to be some mess but its easily wiped when its on the bottom of the drive.

Mine is a flat head screw end. Needs to be tapped lightly with a hammer to break loose. That's how my mechanic did it and it worked for me.

Thank you for the picture! I have a prop tool already. I did not know about that screw. Does anyone know how much gear lube and what kind to use? Is the Pennzoil lube good for this drive, or do I have to buy Volvo's expensive crap.

I bought Volvo's expensive crap, and now that I have a Merc, I buy their expensive crap. In the grand scheme of things....its cheap.

I used to use the OMC hi vis gearcase lube but when talking to my mechanic he said that he saw less wear on units run on the Merc High Performance Gear Lubr. That was 10'years ago and I'm still using it. $10 a qt or whatever it is, the drive is 26 years old and shifts like new.
