The stuff I use (OMC gasket sealer) never hardens up, I have installed a Cobra impeller and used it on the housing gasket and ran the engine right after with no issues.
This stuff is different than RTV, with that, it is a good idea to let it cure some.
The thermostat replacement is an easy job on the Volvo or similar design OMC engines (actually, Volvo adapted the design used by OMC when they were in a joint venture some years back). I have to do it about every season because they start to stick open because of rust particles or sand getting caught in the stat and then it won't close and the engine never warms up.

Well she started and warmed up to 160ish nicely at the dock, and water wasn't leaking so I take that as a good sign. I don't think the stuff I used ever sets either, I wiped off some excess 24hrs later and the consistency was exactly the same as when it was put on.
Thanks for all the help.

Steve.

good work, now see that was easy.
I started with changing the oil and winterizing...
Now, I do all the maintenance on the boat, the only thing I won't or can't do is fix seal leaks on the outdrive, that takes special tools. I do pull the drive at the end of each season to check the bellows, u joints and gimble bearing.
I did a partial deck replacement about 5 years ago, that was a big job. Eventually I will do an engine R+R, not sure if I can do this in the driveway or if I will hire out the actual lifting to the boat yard owner with his crane.
Boat systems are simple compared to today's vehicles. Thank God for Ed Cole (GM engineer) and his wonderfully designed Chevy small block engine. With out those simple engines boating would be a lot more expensive....
