I bought one of these at home depot:

I'm hoping to just cut the pipe and slip this on, hopefully minimal flooding. Even my wife's finger needs to come off the hose to put on a fitting.

Update - got the valve on with minimal water spilling, the valve above just slides on, so cut hose, slide on quick. A tea-towel under caught most of the spill. Now the filter - once off I could see it was completely clogged, and to top it off it had been broken and epoxied closed, so I couldn't get at the screen. I stuck a plastic piece in there and washed it out with a hose. After that the pump primed great!
After running through another tank of water - the filter was filled with little black bits - either rubber, or maybe bits of mold, I suspect rubber because they felt quite solid. In any case I'm going to disinfect the tank with the bleach procedure mentioned in the boat manual.

Any idea's what could be disintegrating to put black rubber in the there? Maybe a gasket I guess. I also need to buy a proper filter that I can open and clean.
