I wonder if anyone can tell me where to start. I have 3 batteries on our boat, but the manual says it only has two (as does the battery switch) as you can see in the pic. 2 are on the port side, one is on the starboard. I have a little electronics background but haven't really taken a good look yet (not the most convinent access to the engine compartment on this boat) at why and how they are connected. I was wondering if any other 238 owners could tell me which two are the factory and which is the after market.

See anything else in the picture that looks curious? (not that there is, just wondering)

It looks like your ships systems battery is in parallel. One method to increase your capacity of your 12 volt systems.

so that would give me more time to run things without the engine running, like staying overnight? Or more cranking power to start her?

TIA

I can't see that? I do see the NEG side is, but thats normal no matter what. You don't want to leave any batteries in parallel as a normal thing to do. A battery going dead, will dicharge the good battery making both of them dead.

I would use battery switches to control what battery will do what, house or starting.

I would deffinitly add a switch and tidy up that cable mess, looks like the prior owner did it in a rush,

I have 2 group 27s deep cycles on my numbet 2 position and I have 1 optimax starting battery on the number one position. I try and keep her on the 2 position almost all the time so that if I kill them(which has never happened even overnight and 2 days on them) I will always have my cranking battery fully charged to fire up the engine.
I also ran my inverter to just the deep cycle side as well so as to not draw ever from the starting battery

Why did Four Winns take the old manuals off of their site immediately AFTER I bought my boat? Yes I already sent them a nice email requesting they bring them back....

Here's the supplier for the switch covers. Make sure to get the little tool

Just an update, I found them here;
http://search.gandermountain.com/?D=contura&Nty=1&N=0&Dk=0&Ntt=contura
for a couple bucks a piece and the tool was only $3 and shipping (fast) was only $4.99

replaced all my switches and got the tool for less than $25 delivered.
