I put the over board drain in last year, i removed the fridge only 4 screws and put the fitting about 3 inches above waterline i did not remove the hose to the sump drain, i cut it, blocked it off with an end cap, so that it would be easy to reverse, it took me no more than 2 hours including installing the stainless through hull.
Now i can cook and not worry about cleaning out the shower pump.

Cheers

Thanks Sean! Anything to know when drilling/installing the through hull? I'm ordering the same fitting that services the galley sink though hull unless you have another suggestion. Any tips at all to accelerate the learning curve on the install?

As with any through hull you want to make sure you seal up the edges inside the hole itself. You do this to make sure that water doesn't get into the laminated layers of the hull itself. Then you have to make sure to appropriately seal the fitting in that prepared hole. If the material isn't very thick then you can get away with brushing a couple of layers of epoxy around the edges. When the decking is thicker it's a common practice to drill the hole slightly larger, fill it with an epoxy plug and re-drill through that for the final hole. This lets the epoxy ooze into the laminated layers while it cures. This generally only works when dealing with a vertical hole. Most hull sides are fine with just having some epoxy brushed into the edge.

Water intrusion is a VERY BAD THING and it's well worth taking the time to prevent it from happening.

I bought the stainless throughhull from West marina, and used 3M white below waterline sealer, as Bill menioned i applied a big lip of sealer against the back flat area of the fitting and again on the inside of the whole, tightened it up and with my finger removed excess but i did keep a round lip of slight over fill, it looks good, i'm back out in Florida in the next couple of weeks and take a picture.

If someone could let me know how to upload pics that would help.

Cheers

Sean

Hi all, just found this site. Did not know it existed. Looking forward to my 3rd season on my '06 348. Big move this year. We are joining 3 other boats from our marina in South Jersey moving to Delaware. Our new marina is 7 miles from the Chesapeake. Hoping to visit many new places this year. Also hoping the fuel costs stay down.

My mechanic tried to order the thru-hull fitting from FW but they could not find anyone there that knew exactly which size to use.....I want to get involved but I have time now.

We looked at our outdrives the other day and found that there was substantial corrosion on them. Also, the Mercathodes "Popped" not exactly sure what that means but it isn't good. The mechanic sent pics to Mercury for review and the woman who my mechanic deals with in the warranty dept. Nona, escalated the claim to the engineering dept. They subsequently said that they were sending two brand new drives to be installed. I am not sure exactly why but have my suspicions. My drives are SeaCore the new process that is supposed to all but eliminate corrosion issues on the Bravo III drives. Well, I got news for them, we had plenty. I think Merc wants the drives back to analyze them and find out why they didn't resist corrosion like they are supposed to.

We had corrosion just behind the props, on the top of the drives and a few other spots. As a reminder, we boat in the Potomac River about a three hour cruise from the Chesapeake Bay. I would say our water is not even brackish but completely fresh water. We did spend two weekends in the river about 1 hour from the bay but that was about it. I doubt we should have that much corrosion in just 5 months of in water use.

Anyone else with SeaCore that had issues?

Sorry to hear about your corrosion issues. Glad they're stepping up, but flashing back to last year, the whole idea with your moving away from the 340DA was to get away from systemic problems and have 'Better Luck'. I hope it goes as smoothly as possible.

I had the dealer order the same fitting that's used for the head sink. I can probably get the part number if you still need it.

Go to photobucket.com and create an account. Then upload your images. take the URL it lists under the pic after it has uploaded and simply copy and paste it into your posts.

Don't you mean the head sink. The galley sink is the problem because it flows into the shower pump and has the strainer that always clogs up and the box fills with water and overflows into the forward bilge because the box is not water tight. I want to perform the same surgery an re-route the galley sink directly overboard.

Are the any special precautions or drill saw blade that should be used to prevent any splintering of the fiberglass? is it best to drill from the inside or the outside?

Did this on our 328. Had to locate the hole further aft to get any fall. Almost to close to the waterline foe comfort. Regarding drilling the hole, I put duct tape over the hole location, then with the proper hole saw run it in reverse to deeply score the gel coat. This should eliminate splintering. Remember measure six times, cut once!

My mechanic's only concern about pulling the fridge was that he wasn't sure of the length of the wires both ac/dc. Hopefully there is enough slack to pull out the fridge far enough to work back there. The mechanic said he would be drilling a pilot hole on the inside and drilling from the outside using a hole saw. If that helps.
