Hi, I have a 2002 268 with the 5.7 and I have oil leaking into the bilge. I checked the oil and it was very low so I went to add oil but I cannot fine the oil fill plug!! I ended up putting a quart into the oil dipstick hole very slowly. Where is the filler neck? (Sounds like a stupid question, but I cannot find one at all!) Also, are there any places that may leak at the bottom of the engine? I can't see anything that is visibly wet from oil but the bottom of the bilge is soaked. Does the oil pan leak in these engines or is there a drian plug on the engine? Any other places that I can look? Help! Rob |

Chevy small blocks all have an oil fill in the valve cover...usually it's the right hand one as you face it...look here.... http://www.michiganmotorz.com/305ci-vor ... p-110.html If you have oil leaking in the bilge, get an inspection mirror and look under the oil pan, sometimes they rust out then they leak, sometimes the part of the pan where the fitting for the dipstick tube rusts out, the timing chain cover gasket can leak, and the main seals front and rear can leak. In addition, if you are seeing smoke out the exhaust (bluish smoke) then it could be valve seals which are common on older Chevy small blocks... |

I would check the valve cover gaskets, oil filter (make sure its not loose), drainplug (bottom of oilpan and thats a beeotch to reach), oilpan gasket. You should be able to run your fingers along those areas and see if you can detect any oil seepage. As for the oil fill, look on the starboard side valve cover (or left as your looking at the engine), should be a small cap, twist that off, thats where the oil goes. |

One other thing to address is your bilge pump. If it is leaking that much oil, there is a good possibility your bilge pump is picking it up and dumping it in the water (not good). Or did all this happen on land? If so, make sure you collect the oil/water when you pull your hull plug. Not to sound like a enviro-hippie, but dumping oil in water or land gives recreational users a black eye...just sayin.

Even the engine manual does not show the damn oil fill! I downloaded the engine document from Volvo and it is listed but not displayed on the diagram. it is the 5.7 GXI-C. As far as discharge, nope, I have not flushed it overbaord and it is being checked by the marina now as I am planning on taking it to Lake Champlain on Wed. Hopefully they can find the leak and it is only the drain plug. Maybe i am getting old and bline and it is really there

They really can be on either side, keep in mind that these engines were made for like decades so there were little changes in the valve covers over time. In fact some Chrysler 318s actually had em on both sides, probably they wanted to use only one stamping for the valve cover. |

OK, just got word from the marina and it is not good news. They said the oil pan is rotted out and is blistering oil into the bilge. They have to remove the engine to change it out!!! Not good news as I know this is going to cost a fortune I'm sure. Can this be with only 130 hours on the engine and the boat was maintained perfectly? The motor was even painted every year! The mechanic is going to call me tomorrow to discuss the options now. If this is the case, how much money should this cost? Now I am even more disgusted, Rob |

Was/is it a salt water boat? Could be moisture trapped between paintings, or if the bilge ever held standing water for a long period of time that was high enough to soak the oilpan. On first look, it doesn't seem probable that in 10 years the oilpan rusted out, but I have found that anything goes when it comes to boats.....sorry for your luck if that is what it turns out to be.

Well it could rot out if the bilge water was allowed to stay high for a long period of time, or if the factory paint job was sub par. Mine is 24 years old, used in salt at least half of that and not rotted. I spray it with Corrosion X every few years..... |

Time, not hours will be the pan's enemy, as well as water intrusion. I recently inquired about removing my motor (turns out I didn't have to) with two different mechanics and both said a full day to remove and a full day to replace. You might as well do all your gaskets and your starter while it's out. It hurtss, but better to only haul it once. |
