Post subject: | REPLACING SHIFT CABLE |
I had the unfortunate experience of losing shift control yesterday. Ended up having a collision with a steel wall. Minor damage no injurys. Has anyone replaced a Volvo shifting cable? |

the cable is not bad for two people to do,..1 do you have one or two engines...2make damn sure you hook a heavy string at the outdrive approx .20' or more, next your drive is down, take cover plate off top,3(10mm)bolts,you now can see the ass end of your cable.now take your cotter pin out(don't lose ant of these parts your're about to take off)unthread your ajustment nut(all the way off,try to measure the length, this will put you close with new one)tie your string to cable(small !!!!) tape this union.unscrew shifter, disconnect fromshifter(again pay attention to disassembly, don't lose parts)pull out old cable while your string is following until the string reaches the shifter +.replace the opposite direction using your sting to pull new cable.take your time 2 people one feeding one pulling |

I did it with the help of my 10 yr old. Scariest part...removing the parts at the shifter and not dropping them into the gunwale never to be seen again. I pushed the cable from the engine space outward. Put some lubricant on the end of the cable before hand and it will be much easier. One engine down, one to go! |

Update. Pulled the boat today and discovered a missing cotter pin and jam nut on the belcrank connection. Very easy fix. .20 in parts but about $500 damage to the bow. |
