Hello everyone, new 2006 Vista 258 owner here with his head held down in shame. I am not new to baoting but this is my first cruiser so there's a lot more to get used to then I thought.

I have a Westerbeke 3 KW BPMG genny in my boat and it was running great. This weekend I was a dumbass and ran it under load forgetting to open the cooling water seacock. It ran for a while then died, I asssume from the temperature safety cutoff.

Now when I try to start it the genny starts great, sounds fine, buy dies seconds after you release the start rocker switch. I know this can happen if ater start the control module detects low oil pressure, over revving, high temp, or high exhaust temp. Is it possible I fried one of the two temperature sensors?

I know there's a way to bypass each sensor to find out which one is killing the genny, how do I "ground" the sensor to see which one is bad?

Have you replaced your impeller? If you have not, don't run it again until you do. It's not pumping any water if you ran it that long dry.

I doubt you fried the temperature sensors.

But the impeller is probably a sure bet!

Thanks guys. I agree the impeller is probably toast but something else has to be wrong for it to die a second or two after letting off the start button. Does anyone know how to bypass each sensor, one at a time till I find out which one is causing it to die?

Yes, it was not a pleasant job, tackled it last weekend and my ribs are aching. Impeller had one vein broken off and I cooked the exhaust temp sensor which is what was killing the genny after initial starting. Running great now. Thanks everyone for the help.
