Are there any thoughts on re-powering my '89' 23.5 Vista, my engine is shot so will probably put a 300 hp 5.7 from US Engine who is down the road in Kirkland WA. The torque will destroy the old cobra outdrive so what is my best option for a 4000 lb boat, there are so many gear ratios to choose from etc. I will also add a three inch riser on the exhaust and a hold baffle between the horn and the elbow to keep any waves from pushing water into the engine while pulling crab pots with the engine off.

I have a 5.7 Volvo on my Four Winns 225 Sundacer! 280 HP! WOT will hit 51 MPH!

So you have the above mentioned boat; a Four Winns 225 Sundancer,,,,um OK!

And a 1999 Four Winns 298 Vista capable of 44 mph.

What engine and drive ratio did it have originally?
If the Cobra is in good shape a 5.7 should not tear it up, you can convert it to a VolvoSX by changing the pivot housing but it's expensive.
